THE LEAST luminous star in the sky, a so-called brown dwarf, has been identified. The star is only one twenty-thousandth as bright as the Sun and may contain as little as a twentieth of its mass. It is 30 per cent less luminous than the faintest star yet found. Phillip Ianna of the University of Virginia and Mike Bessell of Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories in Australia have made new measurements of the star, which was first photographed by Mike Hawkins of the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh in 1988. By working out the star’s position, about 68 light years from the Sun, Ianna and Bessell have measured its intrinsic brightness – that is, its actual luminosity as opposed to how bright it appears from Earth. Brown dwarfs are ‘failed’ stars,
